A few must-see stops on your road trip
1. VENDÔME
Of course, you can’t visit the Vendôme region without stopping off in Vendôme itself.
Park your van or motorhome in the town centre (we recommend the ‘Prés aux chats’ car park), and take your time exploring the historic centre of this town of art and history.
Pop into the tourist information centre to pick up the free booklet ‘Laissez-vous conter Vendôme’, which will guide you along one of the two signposted heritage trails.
In the morning, why not treat yourself to a detour to Vendôme market (on Fridays and Sundays), where local producers will introduce you to the flavours of the region. ‘Le Trèfle’ goat’s cheese, honey, fresh fruit and vegetables, saffron, poultry…: it’s a feast for the eyes and the taste buds.
2. CASTLES
Just a few kilometres from the famous Châteaux of the Loire, the Loir Valley and the Perche Vendômois region are brimming with more intimate residences or those dating from more distant eras:
– Château de Meslay,
– Ruins of the Château des Bourbon-Vendôme,
– Medieval fortresses at Fréteval, Lavardin, Montoire-sur-le-Loir and Mondoubleau
– Ronsard’s birthplace
– Templar commandery at Arville
3. THE SMALL VILLAGES OF THE VENDÔMOIS REGION
The Vendômois region is teeming with picturesque villages, some of which are still little-known but full of charm: Trôo (a small troglodytic village with the ©Petite Cité de Caractère label), Lavardin (awarded the © ‘Most Beautiful Villages of France’ label), Montoire-sur-le-Loir and Mondoubleau are all places where it’s lovely to wander about, relax and discover the daily lives of the locals.
Some of these villages have specially designated areas for motorhomes, offering handy facilities.
You’ll also find places to do your shopping or treat yourself to a meal out.
4. THE VINEYARDS
If you’re a wine lover, do take a detour along the country lanes around Thoré-La-Rochette and Villiers-sur-Loir, amidst the region’s vineyards, and discover the wines of the Coteaux-du-Vendômois Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC).
Our winegrowers welcome you to their estates, where you can discover the distinctive character of their wines, the iconic grape variety of which is Pineau d’Aunis.
5. ACTIVITIES AND LEISURE: A HOLIDAY TO SUIT EVERY TASTE
The Vendôme area is not just about its landscapes and heritage sites: the region also offers a wealth of activities for the whole family.
– Hiking and cycling: there are several routes available for exploring the region’s natural surroundings. Walkers and cyclists will enjoy the varied landscapes, from the banks of the Loir to the forests of the Perche.
– Water sports: for thrill-seekers, the Loir Valley offers climbing spots (Thoré-La-Rochette), whilst the river is perfect for canoeing, kayaking or fishing.
– Local markets: Some villages have their own markets, offering a wonderful opportunity to discover local produce. Authenticity is the order of the day, with regional specialities sure to delight food lovers.
– Festivals and events: Depending on the season, you can take part in numerous festivals, such as the Montoire-sur-le-Loir World Music Festival or the villages’ traditional fairs.
